On the “Hadley” climate data

I couldn’t help myself, I broke down and found the download and read it. Then I went and looked for what else was around.

For those not in the know, the computers of the “Hadley CRU” (so called by Anthony Watts, a major voice among climate change skeptics; properly the Climatic Research Unit of the University of East Anglia) were hacked and almost everything – emails, data files, reports, etc – was copied. A portion (a LARGE portion, over 10,000 files) was posted to an anonymous FTP server, and this download has been bouncing around anonymous servers for a while now. The emails (but not the data) have among them messages that seem to indicate the CRU researches modified data and sabotaged skeptics, making of AGW (Anthropogenic Global Warming) a bigger deal than the skeptics say it is.

Saying it more simply, the claim is this file shows the whole Global Warming thing is the result of a conspiracy to falsify data.

This is as accurate as the evidence showing the administration of the US government knew of and colluded in the destruction of the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001. In other words it works only if you cherry pick some evidence and make peculiar interpretations of some of what you’ve picked. If you consider it all and/or you look at common interpretation of what’s there it turns into, well… conspiracists will ride this forever. The rest of us will shrug and continue with our lives in the real world.

Not least: the data itself shows no evidence of manipulation. Further, the data is congruent with data from other unit studying the climate found throughout the world.

Of course, you’ll not convince those who WANT AGW to be wrong. Some, eventually, will probably change their minds. Others never will. We all have our foibles.
