Political canniness

Yeah, I know, it’s Christmas, why am I posting non-Christmas stuff. Well, largely because this delighted me and if I don’t do it now I’ll forget for a while.

For the past couple of weeks I’ve been reading much angst of how the Health Care Bill is going to drive Republicans to victory in this upcoming year’s elections. To respond seasonally: Bah, Humbug.

At the worst, the delay will take us to mid-February. By May there will be much that will have superseded all the noise.

Oh, sure, there’s the economy, and as I said I figure between the health care bill and the delayed stimulus effects and the jobs bill (aka Son of Stimulus) and all that it should be pretty plain by the end of summer that things are getting better. Won’t be fixed, mind you, but better. But that’s not the Big Thing. No, the big thing was already announced much, much earlier this year, and everyone seems to have forgotten it.

The phrase is “Immigration Reform.” Expect the right to go absolutely ballistic over it.

And in the process, expect all the angst and anger that was driving everyone on the left away to bring them back – and at the same time return the anger and angst against the right.

As I recall, President Obama said this (immigration reform) would be on the agenda in 2010. I suspect it’s canniness in play for the reasons stated.

It’s going to be fun to watch.
