Governments and wealth

One of the trusted truisms I see on conservative sites is that governments don’t make wealth – never have, never will. I sometimes wonder what they mean by “wealth.”

Let’s see… there were the heavy subsidies in rail, highways, and telephones, all of which contribute quite a bit to our wealth. It was the government that paid for the internet, with the development occurring under DARPA.

The government purchases literally billions of dollars worth of goods and services from companies.

I really don’t get what they’re saying when they say government doesn’t create wealth. Because every example I’ve ever seen means neither do corporations.
