Yeah, a bit of politics. My wife and I were talking about the political parties and their history, and it dawned on me that what we’ve really got is three parties. We’ve got the Democrats, we’ve got the Republicans, and we’ve got this un-named third party that I’m going to call the cuckoo’s nest party.
Now if you didn’t know, some species of cuckoos have this really interesting trick. They lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. The cuckoo eggs hatch early and they push out the eggs or hatching younger birds and take the food.
Now back in the 1850s and 1860s the democrats weren’t one unified party. There were the northern and the southern democrats. There were points in common, but on the major issues that eventually led to the civil war they weren’t in agreement at all. But the Northern Dems let the Southern Dems get their way because the alternative was to be a minor party with the Republicans getting it all their way.
Even post-war this procedure continued – right up to the passage of the Civil Rights act. (By the way, when you hear that democrats fought that act on every front, go look at which dems it was. Just a point.) And on the heels of the CRA’s passage Nixon pulled the so-called Southern Strategy. And all the southern Dems became southern Republicans.
The cuckoo’s just about taken over the nest. It’ll be interesting to see what happens next.
